Leopards, tigers, zebras…oh my!

Animal prints have remained a timeless wardrobe staple that may dip in and out of the limelight but never actually disappears.

For hundreds of years, animals were killed for their fur to protect people from the outside elements. But animal fur was also made into large rugs for Kings and Queens to symbolise their power and wealth.

We’re not so big on killing animals for their fur anymore (definitely a good thing!) but we’ve been mimicking their fur patterns on anything from earrings and tops, to shoes and skirts, as well as non-fashion items like phone cases and throws.

It seems like celebrities are still inspired by animal prints of the cruelty-free variety too… Just in October 2020, Kylie Jenner launched her leopard-themed ‘Wild Thing’ make-up collection.

And who could forget the animal-themed scenes from Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘WAP’ video…

…meowwww

Even more recently throughout 2021 and into 2022, fashion designers have just kept serving us looks to pounce on…

So…why am I feeling animal prints this summer?

Well, to be honest, I like many different quirky or outlandish prints - houndstooth, chevron, checkered, gingham, you name it!

I am by no means a minimalist, but what I do love about animal prints (leopard and zebra in particular) is that they will make virtually any outfit look bold and trendy.

Still, I know it can be a slippery slope between looking sophisticated and looking like a road crossing, so a good degree of finesse is needed to pull it off well - especially under the bright summer sun!

But, in keeping with the season, I am inspired to go colourful with animal prints in an alternative hue, and I’m in love with this dress below by Never Fully Dressed!
